Kiki Streng

Erasmus MC

Postdoctoral researcher

My name is Kiki Streng, and I am a postdoctoral researcher in the Public Health Virology group at Erasmus MC, for Frontrunner 1: Climate change and vectorborne virus outbreaks, with a specific focus on the inundation of the Eendragtspolder. I will focus on analyzing all the data gathered before, during and after the inundation. I am a veterinarian (graduated in 2017), and obtained a PhD on surveillance of zoonotic arboviruses in animals from Wageningen University & Research in the OneHealthPACT project (December 2024). Currently I work two days a week as a small animal veterinarian, which I combine with my role as a postdoc at Erasmus MC.

During my PhD I focused on surveillance of zoonotic mosquito-borne viruses in a One Health context. Furthermore, I learned a lot from my fellow OneHealthPACT colleagues focusing on related topics such as mosquito ecology, climate scenarios, citizen science etc. I will use the knowledge and skills I acquired during my PhD to continue to study this complex system with its many interactions between humans, animals and the environment. As we face great challenges related to climate change, I am very much interested in the effects of these changes on animals, humans and the environment. I hope that our research focused on the effects of these changes can help provide more insight on how to keep our environment, animals and human healthy.
