Winds4change
Harnessing wind for a cleaner shipping industry
The ships that carry our food, clothes and everyday products across the oceans also carry a big challenge. Shipping is responsible for nearly 3 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. To meet international climate goals, the industry needs to transform rapidly.
Our project Winds4Change explores how wind, one of humanity’s oldest companions at sea, can once again drive the future. With innovations such as rotor sails, wing sails and automated kites, combined with real time data and artificial intelligence, ships can use wind energy in ways that were never possible before. The result: cleaner oceans, less fuel use and fewer emissions.
Transforming an industry of this scale is not without obstacles. Questions about costs, scale and how to adapt existing ships and supply chains still stand in the way. Winds4Change brings researchers, engineers and industry partners together to tackle these challenges and design a blueprint for scaling wind propulsion worldwide.
This is more than a story about reducing emissions. It is about showing that decarbonization is possible, that innovation and collaboration make a difference, and that the future of shipping can be both sustainable and inspiring.
