Our vision and mission

Vision

We are committed to reducing early health disparities so that every child has an equal opportunity to develop – with a healthy start as a foundation.

At Healthy Start, we envision a society in which every child and young adult—regardless of background or circumstances—has the opportunity to develop to their full potential. We believe that equal opportunities begin with a healthy start in life. That’s why we focus on targeted prevention, strong collaboration between science and practice, and a clear focus on the first 1000 days. By recognizing health disparities early, we work towards a healthier and more resilient life course for everyone. In this way, we contribute to a future in which health, well-being, and participation are not dependent on where you were born.

Mission

Healthy Start contributes to the development of innovative prevention and intervention approaches through co-creative research that give children and young people the best possible start in life, regardless of their background or starting point. We connect interdisciplinary scientific insights with practical applications and collaborate with young people, healthcare professionals, educational organizations, technological innovators, and regional partners to achieve meaningful, sustainable, and inclusive system changes.

Ambitions

Our research and projects focus on six interconnected themes—our ambitions—which together form the foundation for a healthier and more promising life course for children and young people, from early childhood (under 1 year) through young adulthood (21 years). Based on these ambitions, we develop innovative strategies together with young people, parents, and professionals that truly make a difference.

The first 1000 days and a resilient life course: Reducing inequality of opportunity through an optimal start for every child

Children’s hospital of the future: Building a family-centered and future-proof healthcare system for children, parents, and professionals

Active lifestyles for children with chronic illness: Empowering children with chronic diseases to lead active lives through smart technology

Mental well-being of youth: Improve the mental health and resilience of children and adolescents

Youth delinquency and addiction: Identifying individual factors that support and motivate young people to pursue their own (long-term) goals

Youth participation to shape the future society: Empowering youth for meaningful change
