Irwin Reiss
Erasmus MC
Healthy Start Academic Lead, Professor of Neonatology
Irwin Reiss is Professor of Neonatology at Erasmus MC – Sophia Children’s Hospital, where he has been the head of the Division of Neonatology since 2011. Within Healthy Start, Irwin is one of our Academic Leads. His research and clinical focus are on improving outcomes for preterm and critically ill newborn babies. He has published multiple scientific articles, and he collaborates closely with colleagues inside and outside Erasmus MC.
In 2005 he moved to the Netherlands, where he worked as a consultant at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Erasmus MC Sophia until 2011. He holds two PhDs and was appointed Professor of Neonatology and Head of Department in 2011.
In his work, he combines clinical innovation with implementation science. For example, he co-authored a Dutch tele-neonatology pilot showing that audiovisual consultations between NICUs make care shareable across locations and can reduce unnecessary transfers. He is also involved in training and quality improvement in the NICU, through the Sophia NIDCAP Training Centre, and in the expansion of NICU capacity. His goal is to improve neonatal care systems so that every newborn receives the right care at the right time, regardless of location.
